description:

This dataset represents the opportunity area for implementing the agricultural technologies restoration intervention as modeled for the National Forest Landscape Restoration Assessment. Agricultural technologies refer to any type of intercropping of trees with crops and include conservation agriculture (CA), farmer-managed natural regeneration (FMNR), and agroforestry (AF).

Mapping areas potentially suitable for agricultural technologies (including CA, FMNR, AF) were mainly defined as areas of annual cropland with very low or no existing tree cover. The data inputs included land use/land cover classified as annual cropland, tree canopy cover less than 15 percent, slope less than 20 percent, and exclusion of protected areas or forest reserves. The slope threshold was implemented to exclude marginal lands that are unsuitable for any type of agriculture because of their steepness, even if they are already under cultivation. Combining these datasets produced the map of opportunities area for agricultural technologies (CA, FMNR, AF). The total opportunities area for agricultural technologies (CA, FMNR, AF) in Malawi is 3.73 million hectares, which is nearly 40% of the total land area of the country.

The data were then prioritized by three socioeconomic and environmental factors that were determined during stakeholder consultation to be the most important for adopting agricultural technologies. In other words, where data for these socioeconomic or environmental criteria overlapped with opportunity area for agricultural technologies, then the areas were identified as priorities. The three criteria used for prioritizing opportunity areas for agricultural technologies interventions were: 1) climate, defined as drought physical exposure, which is a combination of population density and drought likelihood; 2) food insecurity, which is defined as food-stressed areas in need of relief efforts in 2014-2015; and 3) poverty, defined as areas with the highest proportion of population living on less than $1.25/day.

This dataset identifies where all three of these socioeconomic and environmental criteria overlapped, and are therefore the highest priority for implementing agricultural technologies.
